Texas is the "Lone Star State". Pineda sailed along the Texas coast in
1519 and in 1541 Cabeza de Vaca and Coronado visited the interior region.
The Spanish first settled at Ysleta, near El Paso in 1682 and by the 19th
century, Americans moved into the region. In 1821, Mexico, which
controlled the region known today as Texas, gained independence from Spain
and in 1835 Santa Anna became dictator. Texans rebelled and Santa Anna
wiped out defenders of the Alamo in 1836. Sam Houston defeated Santa Anna
in the same year and Texan independence was declared. Texas became the
28th state on December 29, 1845. Some famous Texans include: Stephen F.
Austin, Carol Burnett, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Sam Houston, Howard Hughes,
Lyndon B. Johnson, Mary Martin, Chester Nimitz and Sam Rayburn.
